Algolia Pricing in 2026: What the Pricing Page Doesn’t Tell You

Algolia is one of the most widely evaluated search platforms on the market. It is well-documented, developer-friendly, and has been around long enough to accumulate a large ecosystem of integrations and UI libraries.

But when teams sit down to evaluate it seriously, the pricing picture takes a while to come together. The self-serve tiers publish clear per-unit rates. The enterprise tier does not. And the jump from standard search to AI-powered search involves a rate change that is easy to miss until you are already mid-evaluation.

This article breaks down every Algolia plan using only publicly confirmed figures, explains where costs can accelerate, and compares the structure to what AddSearch publishes directly on its pricing page.

Algolia’s four plans, explained

Algolia’s pricing page lists four tiers. Here is what each one actually includes, sourced directly from Algolia’s official pricing page.

Build (Free)

The Build plan is a genuine free tier, not a time-limited trial. It includes:

  • 10,000 search requests per month
  • 1,000,000 records included
  • 10,000 AI Recommendation requests per month
  • 10,000 crawls per month
  • No credit card required

It is well-suited for developers testing the platform or running small-scale projects. The limits are generous enough to evaluate search quality before committing to a paid tier.

Grow (Usage-based, pay-as-you-go)

Grow is a self-serve, pay-as-you-go plan with no annual commitment. It includes the same 10,000 search requests per month as the free plan, then charges:

  • $0.50 per additional 1,000 search requests
  • $0.40 per additional 1,000 records beyond the included 100,000

Grow adds keyword search, query suggestions, manual synonyms, data transformation, and 30-day analytics retention beyond what Build offers. There is no fixed monthly fee; you pay for what you use above the included allowance.

Grow Plus (Usage-based, pay-as-you-go)

Grow Plus is where AI features enter the picture. The included allowances are the same as Grow, but the per-request rate for additional search jumps significantly:

  • $1.75 per additional 1,000 search requests

That is more than three times the Grow rate, triggered by moving to AI-enabled features. Grow Plus adds AI Synonyms, AI Ranking, Advanced Personalization, Query Categorization, Collections, and 90-day analytics retention.

This rate difference is the most important number on Algolia’s pricing page, and it is easy to overlook when evaluating tiers. If your search volume is modest and stays within the included 10,000 requests, the difference is invisible. If you have meaningful traffic, the bill calculates differently the moment you need AI features.

Elevate (Annual contract, custom pricing)

Elevate is Algolia’s enterprise plan. It includes everything in Grow Plus, plus:

  • NeuralSearch (semantic, vector-based search)
  • Ask AI (conversational answer product)
  • AI Collections and Smart Groups
  • Real-time personalization
  • 99.99% availability SLA
  • Access to SSO and enterprise-level support

Algolia does not publish a dollar figure for Elevate on its own pricing page. The listing reads “Start Evaluation,” which leads to a pricing request flow. The only publicly confirmed dollar figures come from the AWS Marketplace, where Algolia lists its Premium plan at $10,000 per year and Elevate at $50,000 per year on a 12-month contract.

A note on Ask AI specifically: it is available on Elevate only, and it requires organizations to bring and manage their own LLM provider and API key. You select the model (OpenAI, Azure, or similar), provision and secure the API key, and build the UI and logic that controls how questions are asked and how answers are displayed to visitors. This is a meaningful operational distinction from AI answer products that do not require a separate LLM setup.

What the Algolia pricing page does not tell you

A few things worth understanding before you get deep into an evaluation:

The AI rate jump is the key variable. Moving from Grow to Grow Plus more than triples your per-request rate on additional searches. For low-traffic sites, this may be irrelevant. For sites with steady or growing traffic, it is the number that determines what you actually spend.

Elevate pricing requires a sales conversation. Algolia publishes per-unit rates for Grow and Grow Plus. It does not publish a rate for Elevate, which is where NeuralSearch, Ask AI, and enterprise SLA live. The AWS Marketplace listing ($50,000/year) is a reference point, but your actual contract will depend on a negotiation.

Ask AI is not a managed product. This matters depending on what you are trying to build. If you want an AI answer layer that works out of the box without configuring a model or managing API keys, Ask AI is not that. It is a developer-configured integration that gives engineering teams control over the LLM powering the answers. That is a genuine strength for teams who want that control. It is also a genuine overhead for teams who do not.

Third-party spend data adds context. Third-party benchmarking data from SpendHound, based on 160 Algolia customers, suggests average annual spend of around $27,600 for SMBs and around $61,300 for enterprise customers. These are not figures published by Algolia, so treat them as directional context rather than confirmed pricing. The same data shows SMB pricing increasing roughly 11% year-over-year and enterprise pricing increasing roughly 18%.

Who Algolia is built for

It is worth being direct about this: Algolia is a capable platform with real strengths.

It is fast. Its API gives developer teams full control over relevance, ranking, and UI. Its ecosystem of libraries and integrations is extensive. For retail product discovery and app search built by engineering teams who want that level of control, it is a strong choice.

Algolia has also published a Forrester Consulting Total Economic Impact study showing a modeled 213% ROI over three years for a composite enterprise customer. It is a commissioned study rather than independent research, so the figures should be interpreted in that context — but it gives you a framework for thinking about the economics at scale.

Where the fit tends to become more complicated:

  • Teams without dedicated search engineering who need to manage relevance and UI themselves
  • Organizations whose primary use case is answering questions from their own website content rather than product catalog ranking
  • Teams who want AI answer capability without configuring and managing a separate LLM

None of these is a criticism of Algolia. They are simply situations where the platform’s architecture creates overhead that may not match the team’s capacity.

Billing modelFixed monthly &  annual tiersUsage-based, scales with traffic

One structural difference worth naming: Algolia describes its usage-based pricing as predictable because it scales with demand. That framing is accurate. But usage-based and fixed are different types of predictability. With a fixed annual tier, you know your search bill on day one regardless of how much traffic you send. With a usage-based model, the bill moves with your traffic, and the rate more than triples when AI features enter the picture on Grow Plus. For teams doing annual budgeting, that distinction matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is Algolia free?

Yes. The Build plan is genuinely free with 10,000 search requests and 50,000 records per month. No credit card required and no time limit.

How much does Algolia cost per month?

Grow and Grow Plus have no fixed monthly fee. You pay $0.50 per 1,000 additional requests on Grow and $1.75 per 1,000 on Grow Plus, after 10,000 included requests. Elevate is an annual contract; Algolia does not publish a monthly figure for it.

Does Algolia have transparent pricing?

For self-serve tiers, yes. Per-unit rates for Grow and Grow Plus are published on Algolia’s pricing page. For Elevate, pricing is not published on Algolia’s own site and requires a sales conversation.

What is Algolia Ask AI and how much does it cost?

Ask AI is Algolia’s conversational answer product, available on the Elevate plan only. It requires organizations to bring and manage their own LLM provider API key. Algolia does not publish an Ask AI-specific price; it is included in the Elevate plan, which starts at $50,000 per year on the AWS Marketplace.

What is the difference between Grow and Grow Plus?

Grow is standard keyword search with usage-based billing at $0.50 per 1,000 additional requests. Grow Plus adds AI features including AI Synonyms, AI Ranking, and Advanced Personalization, at $1.75 per 1,000 additional requests — more than three times the Grow rate.

Is there a simpler alternative to Algolia with published pricing?

AddSearch publishes all tier prices directly. Keyword Search starts at $119 per month on an annual plan. AI Answers starts from $8,400 per year, with no LLM setup required. A 14-day free trial with your own website content is available at addsearch.com.
